Your favourite classic hire cars of 2012

2012 was our busiest year ever for classic car hire, despite some inclement weather damping summer spirits.  The wet weather may have distorted this year's list of the most popular cars chosen by our customers but even some perennially popular convertibles remain favourites even in the rain.
So here is our list of the most popular cars based on number of hires.  A few familiar faces, one or two surprises.....  It's in no particular order.

1. Jaguar E Type coupe

Usually it's our convertibles that grab the hire headlines but this year it was the turn of our coupe hard tops.  Perhaps helped by the weather, the iconic fastback shape seems to have caught the imagination again, apparently fuelled by the E Type's 50th anniversary in 2011.  We now have two E Type coupes available for hire, one in Yorkshire and one in the Cotswolds.  We also have four E Type convertibles available for hire in Devon, Yorkshire, Cotswolds and now London too.  Whichever you choose they are still as good to drive as they look.

2. Alfa Romeo Spider

One of my own favourite cars and consistently one of the most popular available for hire.  We've had this car on the fleet from day one and, as well as being popular, it is always the most reliable.  Not bad for an Italian car.  The Alfa is perfect for a day or weekend away - or a longer holiday tour, as happened several times in 2012.

3. DeLorean

You might not want to take a DeLorean on a European touring holiday - you wouldn't get far with all those clamouring photo-opp fans - but it is the ideal car for a wedding, or just to save you have.  Both of those reasons explain why our DeLorean is in the list of our top 5 most popular cars in 2012.  It only joined the fleet in 2012 but has shown that 30 years after it went out of production it has become an icon for any child of the 80s.  We love it, but we have heard every Back to the Future joke and script line already, in case you wondered...

4. Aston Martin DB6

Like the DeLorean, the Aston proves the power of film on our collective conscious. Without Bond would the Aston be quite so feted?  Actually, we think so.  It is the DeLorean of its era - exotic styling, rarity and sheer four-wheeled presence make the Aston Martin DB6 (who cares if Bond drove a DB5) one of those cars that draws gasps of appreciation even from the uninitiated.  In 2012 once again it proved to be on of our most popular cars being used for weddings, special birthday celebrations, TV productions and even touring holidays. And why not.

5. Morris Minor Convertible

In its own way, the humble Moggy is the E Type for the masses.  Distinctive, enduring and with oodles of character, everyone needs to experience a Morris Minor at some point in their driving career. Sure it's slow and simple but that's its charm - we call them the Time Travellers because they fit you right back into an era when things moved a little more slowly.  And all the better for it.  To demonstrate how popular they are, we have 3 Morris Minor convertibles for hire, plus a rather nice 'woody' Morris Minor Traveller.

So roll on 2013. If you want to hire any of these cars or another car from our fleet of 80 classic and supercars, just call us on 01527 893733 or email info@greatescapecars.co.uk.  For more information on the cars visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk.

Now make your getaway in Wiltshire too

Great Escape Classic Car Hire has added an 11th site to its network of classic car hire locations across the UK.  The new base in Trowbridge, Wiltshire is part of Great Escape's Owner Operated Network, which enables customers to hire classic cars directly from the owners as well as Great Escape's partners.

The new Wiltshire sports car hire location improves Great Escape Cars' presence in the South West, where it recently set up a base in Exeter, Devon.  While the Devon site will boncentrate on classic cars from the 1960s, 70s and 80s the Wiltshire site specialises in more modern 'youngtimer' classics like Mercedes SLK and Porsche Boxster, two cars that are perfect for a weekend getaway.

Great Escape has been growing its network of local classic car hire sites in order to bring the hire of classic cars closer to customers.  This means that they spend less time and money travelling when they hire one of the cars.

The new cars can be booked directly via Great Escape and complement the company's existing range of classic and sports cars for hire.  There are over 80 specialist cars available to hire from Great Escape including classics, sports cars and modern supercars.  You can find out more by visiting http:/www.greatescapecars.co.uk or call 01527 893733.

Our Christmas guarantee: one price, no hidden extras

We know that there are a multitude of ways in which online retailers try to bump up their margins.  They call them delivery charges, administration fees, booking fee, processing fee, any one of a number of fancy names.  We call them a rip off. Whatever you buy from Great Escape Classic Car Hire this Christmas we guarantee that the price you see advertised is the full price you pay.  And nothing more.
Our philosophy here at Great Escape Classic Car Hire is pretty simple.  We want you to enjoy what we enjoy, which is our classic cars.  We believe in honesty and fairness and hidden charges just don't fit into that approach.  We don't even charge card processing fees.  The only extra that appears anywhere on our price list is if you want to add additional drivers to your hire.  When you buy online the price you see already includes VAT and delivery where applicable.

When you choose to hire a classic car from us we make the package you get clear and transparent.  For each car we list the price, the location, the mileage allowance and the insurance excess.  We also include a Frequently Asked Questions page, full description of our Terms and Conditions (in normal, easy to read type size) and an explanation of our Insurance Excess and Insurance cover.
"We charge one comprehensive price for each gift package and each car," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape.  "We think that is the fairest and most transparent way to work with customers.
"It seems to have become standard practice online for retailers to advertise a low headline price and then bump up the cost through delivery charges, VAT and processing fees.  I don't see why our customers should pay extra for us to process their booking or book not knowing that the price excludes VAT.

"We not only advertise the full price you pay but we have also kept our prices the same for 24 continuous months.  So in real terms, the price now is cheaper than it's ever been."
Great Escape is the UK's largest and busiest classic car hire company with a fleet of 60 cars available to hire from 9 locations.  You can find out more by visiting http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk or call  01527 893733

Christmas made easy for classic car fans (and their friends)

If you, or someone you know, loves classic cars then we may just created a soothing balm to your Christmas Gift Anxiety.  There are now four simple ways to put yourself (or, again, someone you love) in the driving seat of one of Great Escape's classic cars, which cover everything from a Morris Minor to an Aston Martin.
You no longer need to simply select a car and hire it for 24hrs, 48 hrs or longer.  While that option is still available, Great Escape Classic Car Hire has launched three other options.  Now you can buy a voucher for a particular price band of car - which gives the recipient access to any car up to and including that price band from any of Great Escape's 9 UK locations.  And they never need to know how much you spent.  Alternatively you can buy a gift voucher for a particular amount and leave them to choose how they spend it - they can use it to hire one car, two cars or top it up and hire a more expensive classic car.  It is completely flexible.
The final option is proving to be the most popular of Great Escape's Christmas gift ideas.  Through the company's new online shop you can choose from a range of classic car driving experiences, driving days and weekend packages.  Each one is fully explained on the site and can be bought online or by calling Great Escape six days a week on 01527 893733. Great Escape guarantees delivery by Christmas on all gifts purchased by Friday 21st December.  Buying driving experiences direct from Great Escape means that you avoid the middle man's mark up and get a much better value package as a result.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire gives you the largest choice of classic cars to hire from one source - the fleet includes over 60 cars available to hire from 9 UK locations including Devon, Cotswolds and Yorkshire.  Prices start at just £95 and are fully comprehensive - no hidden charges, no booking fees, no administration fees.  You just pay the price you see advertised.
You can find out more about Great Escape Classic Car Hire by visiting http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk call 01527 893733 or email info@greatescapecars.co.uk.

Every Type of E Type

There's a reason why the Jaguar E Type is regularly voted the most beautiful car in the world.  And it's the same reason why it is consistently our most popular hire car.  It's brilliant.

With Christmas fast approach our phone is getting busy.  And so often the conversation starts "I see you've got E Types for hire..."

50 years after it first rolled off the production line the Jaguar E Type still makes you catch your breath.  From any angle it is beautiful, a sculpted wonder straight from the designer's pen.  It came from an era before the legislation forced bulbous, amorphous cars on us.

The great thing about the E Type is that it is not just stylish, it is great to drive too.  Which explains why at Great Escape Classic Car Hire we have invested in the largest choice of Jaguar E Types to hire in the UK.  We have 5 E Types available to hire from our sites in Devon, Cotswolds and Yorkshire.  They cover the full range of E Type models from early Series 1 to final Series 3.  We offer the choice of coupes or convertibles and 4.2 litre straight 6 engines or glorious V12 power.

The Great Escape Jaguar E Types can be hired by the day, weekend or week and are ideal for celebrating a birthday, they make a great Christmas present or as a wedding car (we have two white convertibles that are ideal for weddings).  Every hire day includes 24 hours use, 200 miles per day allowance and comprehensive insurance.

Right now we are offering 10% off the hire of all E Types before Christmas.  You can choose to book a date - any time in the next 12 months or buy a gift voucher and then choose the date.  All gift vouchers are valid for 12 months.

For more information visit http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk or call 01527 893733.

Top 10 things to consider when buying a classic car

A classic car on the drive is a dream many of us aspire to.  Saturdays spent polishing it, sunny Sundays spent touring the countryside, top down or 4 up with friends.  It’s an idyllic image and one that brings happiness to thousands of classic car owners every year.

Yet alongside those proud owners, their smiles perfectly reflected in their chrome bumpers, there are many classic car owners who rue the day they ever clapped eyes on their vehicle.  To help you fit snuggly into the former rather than the latter group, here are some top tips on buying a classic car gleaned from our experience running a fleet of 60 classic hire vehicles.  And believe me, if mistakes are there to make, we’ve made them.  But we’ve learned.

1.            Do your research
Before you spend a single minute looking at classic car adverts in magazines or online, spend as much time as possible researching the car you want to buy.  Find out what its strengths and weaknesses are.  Check parts supply and parts costs.  Check typical prices for cars of different condition.  Join the owners club, sign up for online forums, visit classic car shows.  Once you’ve done your desk research talk to owners – most are more than happy to tell you what owning a particular car is actually like.  And generally they know the clever little tricks you need to keep it running reliably and cost-effectively.

2.            Buy the best you can afford
Check what you really need to pay for the car you want to buy and budget accordingly.  Decide what sort of car you want – a restoration project or a concours queen – and budget accordingly.  There are no bargains in the classic car world, only pitfalls.  Prices for cars are all over the place and generally cars are over-priced.  If you’ve researched the model you want carefully then you should have a checklist to run through when you inspect a car – when you see a fault you should have a rough idea how much it will cost to repair.  When you view a car, take someone with you who can keep your enthusiasm in check.

3.            Buy privately
If you’ve done your research and your feet are firmly on the ground then buying privately is the best way to go.  Private sales give you the chance to assess the previous owner properly and you get much more information about how the car has been looked after.  And above all, you avoid the retailer’s premium.  If you have not had time to do the research or you want the security of ‘someone to blame’ a dealer is the way to go.  But personally, we think better value cars are found privately.

4.            Find a local expert
If you’re not mechanically minded then you will need a local garage or mobile mechanic who can keep the car running for you.  This is not always as straightforward as it seems.  Depending on how common the classic you want to buy is you will need someone who is experienced in working on your type of car.  Otherwise you risk higher costs incurred by someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing wasting their time and your money trying to trace otherwise simple problems and faults.

5.            Buy a car that has been used regularly
In the world of classic cars, low mileage is king.  But it’s a myth.  To be reliable a car has to be used.  Generally when we buy a new car at Great Escape it will take at least a year for it to be reliable.  That’s because most classic cars are rarely used, and when they are it’s during the summer months only.  Inactivity kills cars.  To be reliable cars need to be used regularly – not a lot, but regularly.  So when you inspect a car that the owner is proud to say has only done 500 miles since the MOT 12 months ago, walk away or bid accordingly.  Any car is reliable if it is hardly used – it’s when you start to use and enjoy a classic car that it’s weaknesses are revealed.

6.            Put it on a ramp
Most classic cars are shiny because their owners like polishing them.  The underside is a different matter.  When you inspect a car try to get underneath it.  This will give you a window into the owner’s real maintenance regime.  Firstly, the underside should be relatively grime free, showing that the owner jet washes the car properly on a regular basis.  The car needs to be undersealed to protect the body but if the underseal is fresh, ask what it is trying to conceal.  Check for leaks and spray back from the engine.  Check the suspension components – how clean or new are they, have they been recently checked and maintained?  Look for signs of corrosion or of welding – a car with significant localised welding will be worth less than a more original car.

7.            Check the history file
Most classic cars will have a thick history file.  If not, ask why.  Leaf through the file and check that the weaknesses and maintenance requirements of the car have been addressed – that it has been serviced regularly and items like cambelts renewed on time.  Don’t be alarmed by a high number of previous owners – but be suspicious if nobody has ever kept the car very long.  Ask the owner about his experiences with the car – ask direct questions about what has gone right and what has gone wrong.  Why is he selling?

8.            Drive it
However much you love a particular car, if you’ve never owned one before then the chance are you haven’t driven it.  Do so as quickly as possible – ask a club member for a drive or take some test drives at a dealer.  You may find that the dream doesn’t quite live up to reality – if so, admit it and move on.  It will be much cheaper that way.  Similarly, make sure your family or maybe even your friends like the car too – it will make owning it through the ups and downs so much easier.

9.            Be realistic
It is very easy to get caught up in the dream of classic car ownership.  Try to step back.  Ask how often you will drive it, do you have somewhere to park it, can you afford to own and maintain it?  If the answer is maybe or no to any of those questions, think again.  There are other ways to enjoy a classic car, including hiring one, which may be cheaper and less hassle.

10.          Budget for failure
However well you research and buy the car of your dreams, the chance are it will not be plain sailing.  Things will go wrong.  You will discover things about it that you want to improve.  This is inevitable and unavoidable.  All you can do is minimise the chance of it happening.  So budget accordingly – expect to spend 20-30% of the purchase price in the first year making it better.  It will be worth it – you’ll be investing in the car and creating a vehicle that you can enjoy any time of the year.

Great Escape Classic Car Hire is the UK’s largest classic car hire company with a fleet of 60 classic cars to hire from Yorkshire, Devon and Cotswolds as well as several other sites.  Find out more at www.greatescapecars.co.uk or call 01527 893733.  Mention this article and claim 10% off the total cost of any hire car.

One day, 5 classic cars. The perfect Christmas present?

It’s every schoolboy’s dream.  Standing on a wet and windy airfield somewhere near Derby waiting for 3 laps in a Lamborghini.  Such, according to a recent article on speedmonkey.co.uk, is the reality of a Drive the Dream supercar day.
I read that article with interest because I run a classic car hire company.  We don’t work with the big experience day providers because they take too big a slice of the income.  This leaves even less to provide customers with a good day out.  And that is what I think we do, for £199.
So here’s the flipside of those supercar days.  For roughly the same price as 3 laps in a Lambo Great Escape Classic Car Hire offers a full day out driving at least 5 classic cars on some of our favourite roads.  We are running 5 Great Escape classic car rallies in 2013 from our Yorkshire and Cotswolds sites and the format is simple and proven.  Each rally includes a selection of cars from our local fleet – usually E Types, Jensen, MG and Mk2 with maybe a DeLorean or Aston thrown in for good measure.
Our main business at Great Escape is hiring classic cars for 24 hour periods.  But I devised the rally idea after realising that lots of customers don’t want to spend 24 hrs in one car – often an hour or two is enough to say ‘I did it.’  Providing the chance to drive several cars in one day adds a lot of variety to the experience without boredom.  Couple that with a specially chosen route on some great driving roads and you have a pre-planned day that means you just turn up, turn the key and drive off.
We allow no more than 16 people on each rally, with two people per car, in order to keep the day flowing smoothly and maximise time in the cars.  Each route is hand-picked by us to provide real variety and interest and covers at least 120 miles.  This means that everyone gets around 60 minutes driving each car – more than enough time to get to grips with each model.  We stop regularly for driver and car changeovers and refreshments.  The £199 price includes insurance, fuel, lunch and the help of our support crew who follow the cars – and sort out problems if they occur.
The rally idea originated with our corporate clients.  Since we started offering the same package to individual customers in 2011 it has been hugely popular.  The feedback is always extremely positive, with some claiming it’s the best driving experience day they’ve ever done.
Great Escape Classic Car Hire rally days will always be fairly low key because we don’t want to sell them through activity providers.  If we did, the price would have to virtually double or we’d have to cut a lot of corners.  By selling direct to enthusiasts we can provide a unique and personal service that we think provides decent value for money.  Far better, I think, than 3 laps of a dreary airfield in a tired Lamborghini.
You can find out more about our rallies on our website at http://www.greatescapecars.co.uk or call 01527 893733.  Mention this blog and we’ll knock 10% off the £199 price.

Drive 5 classics in a day for just £199

Our classic car rallies are consistently the most popular part of our year, giving customers the chance to drive at least 5 different classic cars on some of our favourite driving roads in Yorkshire and the Midlands.
For 2013 Great Escape Classic Car Hire is running 5 classic car rallies for customers from its Yorkshrie and Cotswolds sites. Places are available at a new low price of just £199 per person.  This all-in price includes the chance to drive at least 5 different classic cars, a minimum 120 mile drive, insurance, fuel for the route, touring notes and lunch.
Great Escape has been organising classic car rallies for corporate and private clients for several years, so you can be confident that each event will be well organised and benefit from our experience.  Each trip is accompanied by Great Escape staff in support vehicles and there are regular rest stops throughout the day.  Each classic car rally is limited to a maximum of 16 people so that everyone gets the maximum amount of time in the cars with minimal hanging around.
"A Great Escape rally is the perfect way to sample a range of classic cars," explains Graham Eason of Great Escape.  "if you're not sure which car you prefer, this is a great introduction.
"And everything is done for you - route, timings and even lunch.  You also get to meet a great bunch of fellow enthusiasts during the day."
The Great Escape classic car rallies are available to book online now through the Great Escape shop or by calling  01527 893733.  For more details on the rallies, click here or click on the link on the left of the website.
